With everything going to Hell in Washington, the White House has totally failed to provide any substantive help for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Organizations we are supposed to trust; Organizations like the Federal Emergency Management Agency are actually encouraging donations to bloodthirsty Neo-Conservative radicals such as Pat Robinson, and we find ourselves in a situation where we want to aid in the relief effort, but we don’t know how to make sure our donations find their way to those who truly need help, and not into the pockets of the corrupt Washington establishment.
In some cases, National Guard units are activated, but simply waiting to be deployed, because there is no Federal funding to get them there.
The best way to help, and the way I will be helping for my part, is by giving to the American Red Cross, and by giving them the things on their list that are most needed. As I write this, they are looking for the following items:
- Bottled water (liter or larger)
- Nonperishable food
- Clothing (new or like-new condition)
- Infant supplies (formula, diapers, etc.)
- Snacks/protein bars
- First aid kits
- Transistor radios
- Batteries (AA, C, D, 9V)
- Flashlights
- Hygiene products (bar soap, shampoo, toothpaste, etc.)
- Dog/cat food
If you live in Vermont, as I do, you can bring these items to the following locations:
- BENNINGTON: Town Clerk’s Office
- DERBY: State police barracks
- HARTFORD: Fire and police departments
- MONTPELIER: Statehouse
- ST. ALBANS: Collins Perley Recreation Facility
- ST. JOHNSBURY: Municipal Office Building and Fire Station
- ROCKINGHAM: State police barracks
- RUTLAND: State police barracks
- VERGENNES: Vergennes High School
- WILLISTON: State police barracks

Helping the Victims of Hurricane Katrina
My home was hit by two hurricanes last year, and both times it took the National Guard three days to arrive with assistance. The difference being that we were prepared. We had food, water and other essential supplies ready when they were needed. So I guess the fact that these people were not ready is the governments (George W’s) fault.
Well what about the incompetent Mayor of Louisiana who failed to implement an evacuation plan that was already in the books? A Mayor who is just NOW calling for a forced evacuation of the city!
What about the Chief of police who disappeared and was nowhere to be seen or heard from at the height of this disaster? What about how much has been done in the past week by not only the federal government (on your dollar and mine) but also by the awesome generosity of the American people–most of whom are white by the way? What about the millions that have already have been spent by the federal government and the estimated billions of more dollars the federal government is preparing to dole out to help out these people?
What about the evacuation plan that was not implemented and why 250 school buses were not deployed to evacuate people before the hurricane hit?
See, the festering lie here is that this was somehow handled differently because the victims were black. The “narrative” (a favorite word of liberals) they are trying to create is one of a black Mayor who did everything he could but reached and impasse only the federal government could have breached and the federal government delayed because the Mayor is black!
In desperation and opportunistic to a fault, they will try to ride this spin for as much mileage as possible to harm President Bush in some way. Don’t be surprise if demands for reparations for these people are demanded soon as a way for white America to atone for their collective failure to act in a timely manner to help this population of mostly black people. As usual, leftist, liberal “civil rights” leaders will cynically use the real suffering of blacks in order to further their own political aspirations. When will more African-Americans come to that stark realization?
Meanwhile, the real cuprites of this avoidable nightmare disaster, the Governor and the Mayor, will be hailed as helpless victims who did all they could but were not aided by a racist President.
Thank God the American people know better and will not buy the great lie.
Interesting points Mark, but I have to wonder why it is that every single news media outlet had reporters in the city with satellite uplinks hours after the hurricane, and FEMA was nowhere to be seen. Why was Bush in California playing stinky pinky with his buds and Cheney was on vacation? Why was the NSA buying shoes in NYC?
Why wasn’t the National Guard evacuating people the day before the storm hit and evacuations were “mandatory”? Why wasn’t food and water already loaded on trucks and ready to go?
Why has President Bush cut funding to the Army Corp of Engineers three years in a row for maintaining the very things keeping the water out?
As to your points about the liberals and civil rights leaders, I agree wholeheartedly. I don’t think race is the problem. I do think that the President is an incompetent leader though, and incapable of dealing with crisis.

My house was hit and destroyed by a hurricane. I justed mooved when it happened so my kids where frightened! My son Paulo was hurt the most. The table went flying and hit him on the face. I was in tears at the hospital.
i am young, therefore all of this seems extremely confusing. i came across this website while working on a school project, and read all the coments left by pervious visitors. i thought i’d comment because i feel that the youth of the United States should voice their opinion among adults, even if they don’t know much about the topic being discussed, yet care enough to try and make a difference.
what happened in new orleans was terrible.
i remember seeing all the news reports of people stranded on rooftops and in trees. what i’d like to know is, why are we video-taping these people before we help them out? shouldn’t
we get them to safety before bringing in a camera crew?
i don’t understand what the government did, or failed to do in this situation, but i think at this point, it’s more important that we help these people out, than worry about what caused it, or what could’ve been done to prevent it. in the future, it’s improtant we learn from this mistake and hopefully prevent it, but as of now, we should help the people in new orleans, and stop arguing with eachother over what caused it or what Mr. Bush thinks.
